Soroptimist International (S.I.) is a world wide organization for women in management and the professions working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women in 124 countries and territories. Soroptimists work together in a spirit of friendship and fun to make the world a better place for all. Members are encouraged to be aware of and involved in issues of society. Working at all levels of civil society, local, national and international, Soroptimists are involved with a wide spectrum of women's concerns. Soroptimists are women who use the special expertise and management skills developed in their working life to advance the status of women and make the world a better place. Membership offers the opportunity to work with like-minded women throughout the world for human rights for all, equality, development and peace. Soroptimist International is committed to service to local, national and international communities through their program focus strategies. They promote active participation in decision making at all levels of society. Soroptimist International holds General Consultative Status with ECOSOC. It has representation at the United Nations Centers in New York, Paris, Geneva and Rome and works in partnership with United Nations Agencies is an international non-governmental organization. SI is proud of its Official Relations with the World Health Organization (WHO). This organization is also a Board member of CONGO. The first Soroptimist club was formed in 1921 by a group of 80 women in Oakland, Alemeda County, California. They chose their name from two Latin words meaning "best for women". Soroptimists today continue the work begun by their predecessors. The heart of Soroptimist's mission is to "make a difference for women" through volunteer service to the community. Projects are carefully chosen to address challenges unique to today's women. Soroptimist International of Camelback, Inc., founded in 1956, is a cohesive club of professional women from Phoenix, Arizona. SIC meets at 7 A.M., every other Wednesday morning at the Phoenix Country Club at 7th Street and Thomas Road. Program meetings are a special facet of Soroptimist International. A featured speaker talks about topics of interest to women, personal and professional growth, authors, survivors, experts, current events and community issues. The hub of Soroptimist International of Camelback is the focus on service to women and the community through fundraising and volunteerism.
